Terrie Meider had something unique to offer those who came
to the art class at the Black Canyon City library on Saturday of May 17, 2014.
Many of us with an interest in creativity were introduced to something new.
The
mandala.
A visual piece that seemed intricately complicated and too
advanced for most of us, was delightfully broken down into baby steps making us
all feel by the end like authors of a masterpiece.
Terrie passed around a book of illustrations she had done
that were simply amazing. The detail in her work was so professional I asked
her how long she’d been drawing.
Terri told us she had been drawing since age five. As a kid
she would copy the cartoons out of the new paper. She was always looking for
ways to indulge her passion. As an adult she worked as a paralegal in
North Carolina and after a day of continual business logic she needed a creative
outlet to wind down in the evenings. That’s when she discovered a book on
mandala's. She thought it would be fun and something she could do while
watching TV, a way to get that creative mental R & R.
It ended up doing just that, and as she explored this form
of art she realized, “ This is something I can do, expound upon and make it my
own.”
Later on, Terrie graduated from ASU west with a master’s degree
in inter-disciplinary studies. This was a trinity subject of art, math/geometry
and psychology. The study of how
art and geometry affect us mentally and emotionally. What inspired her when it
came time to write her thesis?
Her personal art experience of course.
Her thesis entitled “The therapeutic benefits of making
mandala's.”
Meaning the mental clutter of worries, bills, and problems go
on mental vacation when Terrie’s mandala's are in process of being created. Good
Work!
